Because of the reported economy, I must pick and choose which charities to honor. Yet I understand the urgent need and what my money would bring to people. I use one standard to measure the worthiness: does this bring dignity to those receiving help. It’s a commodity often in short supply during the current partisan climate, as too many people confuse those in need as being people without or, who should be denied, simple human dignity. Once, while at an limit Waffle House counter, a man seated next to me saw my ID badge, working for a newspaper at the time, and began to relate his own experiences. Working at an district warehouse, he explained how his job was “hard work, despite that other people think. “I just don’t get paid a lot for it,” he said. “I’m like millions of other people – the ones who do the jobs others won’t. on vacation, they invite the extra towels, they deliver those expensive Amazon or eBay packages and they ride the trucks to haul the garbage away. “We’re the stark-working poor, who work their butts off just to keep from drowning,” he said. “So why are we looked upon like scum by others. no one with any have has those answers. He had gone to a major optical/eyewear company as part of a charity program, which provided “people in needfulness” with a free eye exam and free glasses. He couldn’t afford brand new glasses and lenses, and the exam ran almost $400 – more than a week’s pay. But he could have the means the extra $50 to get the kind of lenses he wanted, ones without bi-focal lines. The store manager said no. In inside info, the manager said he should be “grateful that there was any business willing to do what they were doing. Either take the cheap lenses and the frames, that no one else wanted, or forbear. The stranger said it all with a bitter tone and taste in his mouth, and it wasn’t the coffee. It had to be humiliating, but what could be said beyond “I’m depressing. Things like rent, food, a car, gas, insurance, some new clothing every now and then. “People don’t realize that giving isn’t about getting rid of your leftovers,” the man added. “I don’t do trash just because it’s let loose. Giving someone a little help isn’t the same as asking for a handout. One of the things that the ‘have nots’ still have is some dignity. It’s when dignity is forgotten that you have problems. I’ve walked in the same shoes – almost homeless, down to my final dollars and working 70-80 hours a week in class to maintain a child support schedule. I once ate leftovers off other people’s plates as if they were served by tuxedoed waiters, and hardened to go to any sporting event that served a meal because I knew it would be my only one of the day. So I try to give time or assistance to area charities that offer dignity along with the pirate – preferably local rather than national charities, where administrative costs tend to chew up a majority of all donations. I don’t poverty my money to fund some professional fundraiser. I want it actually helping people. Which is why I donate to such worthy organizations as The Samaritan Inn in McKinney to domestics the homeless, the North Texas Food Bank to feed the hungry, and Lancaster Outreach to help provide paramount community services. many other generous people do as well.
